We don't doubt CPAN is our source of power. We can't imagine Perl without modules.

However, CPAN is not always perfect for everyone. Sometimes we want NAPC, an alter ego of CPAN, for ease and efficiency.

As a ppm repository manager, I'll talk you some basic history and recent updates, solved and unsolved technical issues, and maybe how to build your own repositories.

As always, I'll talk in Japanese, though slides will be written in English.

Pushmi allows you to create slave replicas of a master Subversion repository. The slaves are writable by regular Subversion clients, making the replication mostly seamless to the users. Come to learn how Pushmi can help developers, especially when there's earthquake and no network.

Mark Jason Dominus: Higher-Order Parsing techniques for Perl

One of Perl's most valuable (but least-used) features is the ability to use functions as if they were data: to pass functions as arguments to other functions, and to write functions that construct and return new functions on request. One exciting application of this feature is in the development of parser programs. We can write a few simple parsers, and then a few functions for assembling parsers into more complex parsers. From this tiny code base, about 25 lines, the parsers snowball to programs that perform dazzlingly complex parsing operations.

Mark Jason Dominus: Perl Program Repair Shop and Red Flags

It's hard to write great code, but it doesn't have to be hard to write good code. 'Red flags' are easy-to-see signs that you have an easy opportunity to make your code better. I'll show many red flags in real programs I've gathered and show easy ways to make these programs smaller, faster, and simpler to understand.

Topics include: Grammars; recursive-descent parsing; trivial and basic parsers; concatenation and alternation of parsers; parsers for optional and repeated items; parsers for lists and blocks; parsers for complete expressions.

Emerson Mills: Virtualization and Package Deployment with EC2

The way we build the new generation of applications and philosophy behind rapid development dictates that we reuse as much code as possible. This, of course, is great since we don't duplicate the work of our peers but it also adds a new level of complexity to the distribution of our applications. CPAN excels as a package management system but large numbers of dependancies and deep dependancy chains can lead to failures and environments which are not easily duplicated. Using virtualization services like Amazon Web Services’ EC2 you can package not only your application but your enviroment as well. Will this finally bring the "ten minute install" into reality? I'll look at what it takes to use virtualization ( In my case EC2 ) to simplify the distribution and reuse of Perl code and applications with large numbers of dependancies.
